To manifest means to be easily seen by the eye or perceived by the mind; it is to put beyond doubt. It is to reveal, declare or make an open statement. It can be likened to the unveiling or product launch by a major corporation. As anyone familiar with such event would attest, no effort is too much, no cost is spared, in the build up to the event; then at the event all the plugs are pulled, the fireworks and attention-grabbing strategies are unleashed. In the launch, we are told the name, use, features of the product and what we stand to gain by purchasing or patronizing it. You see, we are God’s creation and there is no better craftsman or manufacturer than God. As the Psalmist declares in Psalms 139:14 “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well” NKJV. We are created to manifest or showcase the excellency of God. And unlike the product launch of a corporation, we are not a one-time event – we are wired to manifest the excellency of God all through our lives!
The Oxford dictionary defines excellence as “the quality of being outstanding or extremely good”. It comes from the Latin root verb, excellere, - ‘surpass’. God displays the quality of excellence, both in Himself and His creations. In Genesis chapter 1, we see the phrase "And God saw that it was good" appear multiple times, specifically in verses 4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, and 31, reflecting God's affirmation of his creation as good, from the light to the animals and finally, all of creation. There is nothing or no one to compare with Him, and as His creation we are called to reflect His image. Indeed, God does not expect any less from us.
To manifest excellence is both a statement of affirmation and call to worship God through our work and service. There are many Bible verses that refer to striving for excellence in all areas of life, encouraging diligence, and emphasizing the importance of serving God with our best efforts. In Exodus 31:1-11, 36:1-3, we see God choose Bezalel, Aholiab, and other skilled artisans to beautify the Tabernacle while it was being built. Exodus 31:1-5 is worth emphasizing: “God spoke to Moses: "See what I've done; I've personally chosen Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur of the tribe of Judah. I've filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him skill and know-how and expertise in every kind of craft to create designs and work in gold, silver, and bronze; to cut and set gemstones; to carve wood — he's an all-around craftsman.” THE MESSAGE. Another example is Daniel 6:3 “Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm.” NKJV
