Bible verses abound that encourage us to ask God for our needs and desires. Jesus tells us in Matthew 7:7-8 "Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened” NLT. God’s instruction is clear in Jeremiah 33:3, “Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come” NLT. Applying these two illustrative scriptures, we can correctly adduce that indeed we have every right to ask for whatever pertains to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3-5)
God has already provided everything we need for both our earthly life and to live a life that honors Him. While we are very focused on the earthly life, it needs to be emphasized that we must also balance that with a life that honors God. And this is where holy living comes in. The Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary defines holy as “moral and ethical wholeness or perfection; freedom from moral evil... The word holy denotes that which is "sanctified" or "set apart" for divine service.”
From the Old Testament to the New, the message is clear. God has always called us to holiness. In Leviticus 20:7, He commands us “Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the LORD your God”. In Leviticus 11:44-45, 19:2, God adds another reason for this call to holiness: He is holy in Himself. The Apostle Peter reminds of this in 1Peter 1:14-16, “As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." NIV
Holiness is not a heavy burden, but a joyful calling, bringing freedom, intimacy with God, and power to shine as His people in a dark world. Holiness is not about rules and rituals alone—it is about being set apart for God’s purposes, living in a way that reflects His character, and allowing the Holy Spirit to shape us into the image of Christ. Jesus Himself said, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God" (Matthew 5:8). The Apostle Paul puts it this way, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). Holiness begins within—through hearts surrendered to God—and flows outward into our daily lives, influencing our choices, relationships, and witness to the world.
Our four-part series for the month of September. “Holy Living” will help us to discover what it means to be set apart, to walk in purity, integrity, and love, and to rely on the Holy Spirit in every step of our journey. Our prayer is that we will come away renewed, strengthened, and equipped to live lives that reflect God’s holiness in practical and powerful ways. Join us this and every Sunday; on line and on site, as we explore the theme.
God bless you.
