DIVINE BOLDNESS!... PART 1 - INTRODUCTION

The Cambridge dictionary defines boldness as “a brave and confident way of behaving that show no fear”. However, Ron Graham, in simplybible.com, brings the meaning closer to us as “an attitude of strong confidence in God, such that godly things are said and done openly without fear of the consequences.” He further makes a distinction between boldness and arrogance. Whilst arrogance is trust in self, boldness derives from trust is in God. Absolute faith in, and relationship with God, are requisite ingredients to excel in our contemporary world – with myriad challenges such as corruption, sin, war, threats of war, hunger, insecurity, rising cost of living and so on.

The boldness, courage, confidence, or fearlessness required to take the necessary action are available in the word of God; and through the help of the Holy Spirit. Hebrew 4:14-16 is very instructive: “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.  Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” There are times, we have a commission from God, but lack the boldness to undertake the task. The prophet Jeremiah faced such a situation, until God encouraged him (Jer 1: 7-9 “But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord. Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth”)

In today’s world, it will take boldness to overcome fear and live a truly victorious Christian life. But the good news is that God has not left us comfortless. Our four-part series for the month of September, “Divine Boldness” examines scriptural examples of how this boldness can be our reality despite obvious challenges. Join us this and every Sunday as we explore the theme.

God bless you.
