WORD DIARY - REVIEW OF 2 CORINTHIANS

2 Corinthians – A Review

Today, we concluded a verse by verse reading of 2Corinthians! Yes!

It has been a journey. I believe there are learning points for all of us, especially as it was written to a cosmopolitan church which had to deal with all the issues of society of the day.

Do you see some parallels in your individual lives and circumstances? Would you want to share some of these on the platform?

In his former epistle the apostle Paul had signified his intentions of coming to Corinth, as he passed through Macedonia (16:5), but, being providentially hindered for some time, he writes this second epistle to them about a year after the former. Two urgent issues are addressed:

1. The case of the incestuous person, who was under censor, required that with all speed he should be restored and received again into communion. This therefore he gives directions about (Chapter 2), and afterwards (Chapter 7) he declares the satisfaction he had upon the intelligence he received of their good behavior in that affair.

2. There was a contribution being made for the poor saints at Jerusalem, in which he exhorts the Corinthians to join (Chapters  8-9)

There are divers other noticeable matters in 2Corinthians - for example:

1. The account the apostle gives of his labours and success in preaching the gospel in several places (Chapter 2)

2. The comparison he makes between the Old and New Testament dispensation (Chapter 3).

3. The manifold sufferings that he and his fellow-labourers met with, and the motives and encouragements for their diligence and patience  (Chapters 4-5).

4. The caution he gives the Corinthians against mingling with unbelievers (Chapter 6).

5. The way and manner in which he justifies himself and his apostleship from the contentious insinuations and accusations of false teachers, who attempted to ruin his reputation at Corinth (Chapters 10-12 and throughout the whole epistle).

Can you do a personal study of the whole epistle again, looking for these and other themes?

Tomorrow, we begin a reading of Ephesians. God bless you.
