ACCELERATE; OVERTAKE!... PART 1 – INTRODUCTION!

The eleventh month reminds one of the phrase, the eleventh hour – which has its Biblical origin in the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard (Mat 20:1-16). In the parable, a few last-minute workers, hired long after the others, are paid the same wage. Though they were brought on the job after eleven hours of hard vineyard work, they weren't too late.

Jesus’ story makes little economic sense, which was his point exactly. He is giving a parable about grace (in this case to enter the Kingdom of Heaven), and you can’t calculate the grace of God like you can a day’s wages. We receive it as a gift from God, not as something we work hard to earn. This does not of course mean we would not work.

As the year is gradually wrapping up, it is easy to worry about what you have or have not achieved. But look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Heb 12:1-2). You may not see the wind or rain, but the valley shall be filled with water (2Kin 3:17-18). There is even an advanced instruction to dig ditches in the valley, meaning make room for blessings! God’s thoughts concerning us are good, and He will bring us to the expected end (Jer 29:11). David was not reconned with as the choice of king by his own family, but God had all of them stand until he showed up from the bush for the kingly anointing. The Nigerian football team witnessed what is known as the Miracle of Dammam, when it came back from 4-goals deficit to defeat USSR U-20 football team at the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship in Saudi Arabia.

It may be the eleventh hour of the year, but don’t rule yourself out to accelerate and overtake. One thing that needs to be in place though, is our expectation - Prov 23:18 “For surely there is a latter end [a future and a reward], and your hope and expectation shall not be cut off” (AMP) There is also a place for prayer. The prophet Elijah gave King Ahab the good news of an abundance of rain, but he also bent down to pray. Prayer activates the grace to overtake, and indeed Elijah on foot, overran Ahab on chariot, to the gate of Jezreel (1Kin 18:46)

Our four-part series for the month of November, “Accelerate; Overtake” expounds on the enabling grace of God for a victorious Christian experience even in these challenging times. Join us this and every Sunday as we explore the theme.

God bless you.
